Fazira was born on February 9, 1974 in Sungai Choh, Rawang, Selangor. She has been interested in singing and acting since a young age. In school, she joined societies and clubs such as Pramuka, St. John Ambulans, English Language Society and Culture Club.Erra also won the title of Miss Malaysia 1992 and represented Malaysia in Miss World 1992 in South Africa. Miss Fazira was the Miss Malaysia/World in 1992. She was also the 3rd runner up for Miss South East Asia for the 1992/1993 session.She became well-known during the mid-nineties, in particular after starring in the romantic drama Sembilu, a film which grossed $4.2 million, opposite Awie (a popular Malaysian singer and actor). After receiving many popularity awards, she won the Malaysian Film Festival Award for Best Actress in 2001 for her performance in Soal Hati. Her films, which include romantic comedies such as Mr. Cinderella, Gila Gila Pengantin, Cinta Kolestrol, Cuci, and crime/action films such as KL Menjerit 1, Gerak Khas The Movie and Castello, have collectively brought box office receipts of over $70 million, making her the most successful Malaysian actress in terms of local box office receipts. She has been dubbed as Malay Film Primadonna since 1994 because of her success in the Malaysian film industry.
Erra was the first artist to appear on the cover of HAI magazine in its first issue - December 1996. In 2001, she was named as one of the 20 Most Richest Artist in Malaysia by Sentiasa Manja magazine, together with Siti Nurhaliza, KRU, Datuk Yusof Haslam, Chef Wan and Sheila Majid. In 2005, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community in Malaysia listed her as one of the most powerful and successful woman in Malaysia, alongside former Malaysian First Lady, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, National Bank Governor, Datuk Dr Zetti Akhtar Aziz and culture activist Puan Azah Aziz, in a book written by columnist Fatimah Abu Bakar entitled She: A Tribute To The Women Of Malaysia.
